Graphing Activities

Graphing Activities

At the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, the sixth grade science team decided to focus on graphing and data analysis.  Looking at end of grade testing numbers in mathematics, we noticed that our current students answered 85% of graphing and data analysis questions correctly.  Our goal is to see our students answer 88% of graphing and data analysis questions correctly this year.

Here's our SMART goal:

To prepare our students, we're planning to spend time focused on graphing and data analysis in every unit.  We're also planning on administering a series of short, 4-question multiple choice mini-assessments that ask students to use data sets and graphs to draw conclusions.  To measure progress towards our goal, we'll have students keep track of the number of questions that they're answering correctly on each of these mini-assessments.  Then, we will use that data to come up with classroom and team level percentages of questions answered correctly.

This page will contain all of our graphing mini-assessments and other related materials for teaching graphing and data analysis.

Graphing Assessment Tracking Sheet

This simple tracking sheet can be used by students to keep up with their own individual performances on the graphing mini-assessments that we give throughout the year.

Graphing Assessment:  Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Graphing_Activity1.doc

This graphing assessment asks students to look at a pie graph that shares information about the common sources of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States.  It is built from a graph shared in a Time for Kids activity found on this webpage.

Graphing Assessment:  Endangered Species

GraphingAssessment_EndangeredSpecies.doc

This graphing assessment asks students to look at a bar graph that shares information about the changes in the number of endangered species between 1980 and 2000.  It is built from a graph shared in this Time for Kids activity.

Graphing Assessment 3: A Years Worth Of Trash

Graphing_Activity3.doc

This graphing assessment asks students to analyze a pie chart about what is in a year of trash in the United States.

Graphing Assessment 4: Comparing Sheep and Cattle Losses

Graphing Assessment4.doc

This graphing assessment asks students to analyze and compare two bar graphs relating to cattle and sheep losses.

Graphing Assessment 5: SAT Test Scores 1967 vs. 1999

Graphing Activity #5.docx

Students will be given the boys, girls, and total scores from 1967 and 1999.  From that information they will be making comparisons of the data.

Graphing Assessment 6: January Weather

Graphing Activity #6.docx

Students will be analyzing the weather patterns of New York City during the Month of January.
